Circuit Court to host seminar on Property Tax Code's Indemnity Fund

Press Release |

Circuit Court of Cook County Chief Judge Timothy C. Evans and County Division Presiding Judge Michael J. Murphy will present Seminar: Redress through the Indemnity Fund on Tuesday, June 10, 2003, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at The John Marshall Law School, 315 South Plymouth Court in Room 1200. The free seminar will cover the basic provisions of the Property Tax Code that are required to represent homeowners who have inadvertently lost their homes through real estate tax sales.

Chief Judge Evans said, "Quite often attorneys receive frantic telephone calls from new clients who have just lost their homes because of the issuance of a tax deed. Unfortunately, the provisions of the Property Tax Code that relate to real estate tax sales are among the least known provisions of the law. Also, only a handful of lawyers are experienced practitioners in that area of the law."

Chief Judge Evans continued, "There is a demonstrated need to increase awareness within the legal community about the existence of the Indemnity Fund and the procedures involved in obtaining redress for clients."

"Judge Murphy has done an excellent job in organizing an informative presentation by knowledgeable attorneys. The court hopes the seminar will help to increase the number of attorneys who are interested in expanding their practice to real estate tax sales," added Chief Judge Evans.

Issues to be covered include investigating grounds to vacate tax deeds and seeking relief for owners through the Indemnity Fund of the Property Tax Code. Seminar speakers will be Judge Nathaniel R. Howse, Jr.; Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Prinzi, Supervisor, Real Estate Taxation Section; and experienced practitioners Marguerite Ann Quinn and Rodney C. Slutzky. To register, call Pat Kardasz at (312) 603-6117, by Friday, June 6, 2003. Seating is limited.
