Cook County Chief Judge Timothy C. Evans, recently elected Chief Judge of the Circuit Court of County, today announced several significant appointments effecting the Law Division of the Circuit Court. Chief Judge Evans expressed his desire to act quickly to ensure continued commitment to excellence and dedicated service in the Law Division. Chief Judge Evans has also decided to expand the number of judges assigned to the Commercial Calendar Section due to the heavy workload of the judges in that section. Chief Judge Evans stated, "Having served as the Presiding Judge of the Law Division, I am fully cognizant of the need to quickly fill the vacancy created by my election so that the important work of this Division will continue unabated. I am certain that the selection of an able Acting Presiding Judge, the expansion of the Commercial Calendar Section and the assignment of several additional talented judges to the Division will continue the superb work of the Division and that these changes will redound to the benefit of the Division."
Chief Judge Evans has appointed Judge William D. Maddux, 66, as the Acting Presiding Judge of the Law Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County. "Judge Maddux has vast experience as a prominent attorney and a respected jurist admired by his peers," Chief Judge Evans said. "He has presided over some of the most difficult and complex cases in the Law Division and has proven administrative experience through his service as a supervising Judge in Juvenile Court. Bill Maddux has the strong character and compassionate heart necessary to take the helm as Acting Presiding Judge," Chief Judge Evans said. The assignment of Judge Maddux as Acting Presiding Judge takes effect September 24, 2001.
The Commercial Litigation Section of the Law Division handles complex business litigation and has drawn attorneys from all over the country who practice in the Section due to its specialization and excellent jurisprudence. Chief Judge Evans stated, "During my tenure as Presiding Judge of the Law Division, I came to realize that the judges in the Commercial Calendar 1 of 2 Section are extremely overworked. I have therefore decided to expand the size of the Section by assigning an additional calendar to the Section. I am appointing Judge Ronald F. Bartkowicz, who served ably as a trial judge in the Law Jury Section, as a new commercial calendar judge."
Chief Judge Evans also announced that Judge Mary A. Mulhern who was previously assigned to the Administrative Call of the Law Division shall be assigned to replace Judge Maddux as an individual calendar trial judge. Judge Arnette R. Hubbard shall be assigned to the Law Division from the First Municipal District as a trial judge in the Law Jury Section. Judge Stuart A. Nudelman shall be reassigned from the Third Municipal District as a Law Division trial judge in the Law Jury Section. Judge Nudelman previously served in the Law Jury Section. Judge Bill Taylor shall be reassigned from the Law Jury Section to the Administrative Call of the Law Division.
The assignments of the other judges shall take effect October 15, 2001. Chief Judge Evans stated, "I am certain that these changes will strengthen and enhance the stature of this very important Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County."
