Fumes close two branch courtrooms in Chicago

Circuit Court of Cook County Chief Judge Timothy C. Evans announced that two (2) branch courtrooms in the First Municipal District (Chicago) that are located in the Chicago Police Department’s Harrison District facility were temporarily closed today after the Chicago Fire Department evacuated the facility because of noxious fumes.

The Harrison District facility is located at 3151 West Harrison Street. Branch 43, which hears misdemeanors and ordinance violations, and Branch 44, which hears felony preliminary hearings, are located in the facility.

  • Matters that had been scheduled for today in Branch 43 have been continued as follows:
    all cases of defendants in the custody of the Cook County Department of Corrections were continued by order of court to tomorrow, Wednesday, June 9, 2010, for their regularly scheduled court time; and
  • all cases of defendants on bond were continued by order of court to Thursday, July 15, 2010, for their regularly scheduled court time.

Defendants in the custody of the Cook County Sheriff who had been scheduled for bond hearings today in Branch 43 were transported to 2650 South California Avenue and were afforded a bond hearing in Central Bond Court.

All cases that had been scheduled for today in Branch 44 were not heard and have been continued by order of court to tomorrow, Wednesday, June 9, 2010.
