Students spend day at the Circuit Court of Cook County Traffic Center

Press Release |

Nineteen inner-city high school juniors will spend a day observing operations of the Circuit Court's Traffic Center at 321 North LaSalle Street, Chicago, on Tuesday, August 6, 1996, starting at 9:00 A.M.

The youths are part of The LaSalle Street Foundation Scholar Program, created in 1994, to provide achieving Chicago public high schoolers with an opportunity to enhance their preparation for admission to college by seeing first-hand, a wide variety of businesses and professionals at work.

At the Traffic Center, the boys and girls will be shown the entire workings of Traffic Court, starting with the initiation of a ticket, and following the normal process through the offices of the Clerk of the Court; the Corporation Counsel; State's Attorney; Chicago Police Department; Public Defender; Sheriff's Office and Social Service providers.

In the course of their day, the students (who must have a 3.0 grade average and be recommended by their principal) will visit the lock-up and observe actual trials.

Traffic Center Supervising Judge Patrick E. McGann will welcome the scholars in room 516 at 9:00 A.M. There will be many photo-ops and interviews will be arranged.

You are cordially invited to cover this up-beat feature and give your readers, viewers and listeners a break from the usual mayhem that passes for news.
